In social studies we took time this week to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What he fought for, believed in and ultimately gave his life for. Our fourth grade thinkers were able to make some intersting connections and thoguhtful comments about Dr. King and his work.
In math we continue in Unit 4 learning about algebraic thinking as we now apply it to data displayed on a variety of graphs. We are learning to create comparison equations using this information.
In reading we are practicing our informational text reading skills. Noticing the difference between fiction and nonfiction reading.
In writing we are also in the informational genre as we write about a topic we that we feel we know quite a bit about, adding to it a bit through some brief research. Our focus is the format and process as opposed to a full blown research project. Look for books, magazine and newspapers filled with information and plenty of text features coming soon!
In science we've turned our attention to electricity. Our scientists ahve build working electrical circuits and learned the difference between conductors and insulators.
Important Dates to Remember:

Thursday January 22 1/2 Day - End of Marking Period
Friday January 23 1/2 Day - End of Marking Period
Friday February 13 Valentine's Day Classroom Parties
Mon./Tues February 16-17 No School - Mid Winter Break
Your help is needed with an upcoming special program. Each year 4th graders from throughout the district are a part of Disability Awareness Day. For one half day students will travel to our district's Services Center to take part in a series of hands-on activities in order to learn about what it might look and feel like to live with a disability. This program covers visual disabilities, physical disabilities and cognitive disabilites. Each year students walk away with a better understanding and new respect for those who may think, learn, and live in ways different from themselves.
